Active Directory (AD) is a directory service developed by Microsoft that is used to manage network resources such as users, groups, devices, and applications. It provides a centralized method for the authentication and authorization of users and devices on a network.

With Active Directory, administrators can define security policies, assign permissions, and control access to network resources based on the roles and responsibilities of users. Additionally, it allows integration with other Microsoft services such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SharePoint.

In summary, Active Directory is an identity and access management tool for networks that simplify the administration and security of an organization by centralizing control of access to network resources.
